I am trolling for dolphin apprx 120ft of water 4-5 miles past the reef and I was usng 5/0 circle hooks on them but lost a few this past week. I need to change my hooks. What is recommended hook size and shank for whole ballyhoo. Also where is the best place to place the hook also using a skirt.

I like to use 5/0 J hooks seem to work better than circle hooks on dolphin.

I like 5/0 and 6/0 J type hooks as well. A few things I like to do is work the bait in a ?S? pattern thereby breaking up the spine to allow free movement. Also I cut off the Pectoral Fins. I determine the point exit mark by having the eye of the hook below the ballyhoo?s eye, mark the point exit mark with the point of the hook. I cut a !/4 inch slot at this exit point to allow the hook freedom of movement. I use copper wire with a pin, so I have the hook enter thru the gill plate then out the slot I made and finish with a rubber band wrap at the pin
